CL108 Surface Design with David Smith

Fridays, 6 week class

Over the course of six weeks Students will learn a variety of different surface design techniques How to design a surface from planning the vessel to breaking up the surface in to design quadrants. We will also cover a broad area of different surface techniques including, Sgraffito, Inlay Techniques (Mishima), silk screen medium, Slip Transfers, how to work with Commercial underglaze and over glaze transfers, Each week will include a demo and then hands on time with guided instruction/trouble shooting. Students will be required to create work outside of class or during class after demo during open work/ studio time. The week before the instructor will let the students know what phase of pottery will be needed IE: Green, Bisque or Glazed fired.

 

 

1st week: intro to surface Sgraffito (2 leather hard pieces trimmed)  Inlay(Mishima)  (2 leather hard pieces trimmed)

2nd week Homemade slip/underglaze transfers (1 leather hard piece trimmed and finished)

3rd week working with silk screen mediums and homemade and professional screens. (Leather hard or bisque piece)

4th week Commercial underglaze transfers overglaze decals (One glazed and finished Piece)

5th water etching (Leather hard piece)

6th week finishing up final firing

 

Supplies not provided by DFAC: 

Underglazes Various Black is the most important.  DFAC will provide a limited palette.

Package of Newsprint $12

Underglaze decals ($6-$8 per sheet 2-3 Sheets assorted per student ) and over glaze decals ($9 per sheet 1-2 Sheets per student) (Commercial)

Can of Shellac $20

Jar of Mayco silk screen medium. $14

Gold luster and mother of pearl lusters $30 per 2 oz gold
