Advanced
This advanced Sumi-e course delves deep into the sophisticated techniques and philosophical underpinnings of Japanese ink painting. Designed for experienced Sumi-e practitioners who have mastered the fundamental techniques, this intensive course pushes the boundaries of traditional practice while honoring its core principles. Students will explore complex subjects including dynamic landscapes (sansui-ga), birds in flight, human figures, and abstract expressions of natural phenomena such as wind and rain. Special attention will be given to composition (configuration), particularly the interplay between powerful focal points and subtle supporting elements that create compelling visual narratives.
Advanced ink techniques will be covered in depth, including diffused ink effects (tarashikomi), splashed ink (hatsuboku), dry brush (kasure), and layered washing (nijimi).
Students will experiment with various paper types and sizes, while developing their personal artistic voice within the tradition. The course emphasizes the integration of traditional Chinese painting theory with Japanese aesthetic principles, including the concepts of wabi-sabi and yƫgen. Students will study historical masterworks, learning to analyze their compositional strength and spiritual resonance while developing their own contemporary interpretations.
Weekly critiques will focus on both technical execution and artistic intention, helping students refine their work while deepening their understanding of Sumi-e as a vehicle for spiritual and artistic expression.
Prerequisites: Completion of Intermediate Sumi-e or equivalent experience. Portfolio review may be required by instructor.
Supply List: A $20 fee is paid directly to the instructor to cover cost of Sumi Ink, Japanese brush & some paper which the student keeps.
