Starting a pastel with an underpainting gives you a roadmap of shapes, values, temperatures, and color. Learn a variety of underpainting techniques in these two ½ day workshops. On Day 1, we’ll begin counting the ways we can underpaint by doing a series of studies using underpainting with a dark color, pastel and alcohol, an overall warm color, and Art Graf or watercolor. On the next day, Day 2, you’ll select the underpainting technique you enjoyed the most and paint a larger pastel. Will underpainting take you to the depth and breath your soul can reach? I guess you’ll just have to take the workshop to find out.

Bring the pastels, hard and soft, that you like to work with. I prefer UArt 400 sanded pastel paper. For the Day 1 studies, bring 3-4 sheets of  9 X 12 UArt sanded paper. For Day 2, use whatever size pastel paper you would like. If you have 70% alcohol, and Art Graf or watercolor, please bring them as well. I’ll have extra materials with me. Bring your own photo references, any subject matter.
