PR504 Beginner Intaglio Etching with Holly Bird

 Wednesdays, 6 Week Class

Time: 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Tuition $215

Lab Fee: $25

Levels: Beginner

Introduction to basic and safe methods of etching with anon-acid solution (ferric chloride) using copper plates. Printmaking experience is not necessary but having taken
a drawing class or have some basic drawing ability is required. Those with etching experience can move their work to the next level. The use of a large and small etching press, spray-paint aquatint and other methods will be covered. Ages 17 and up.

We use traditional, oil-based inks with Universal Hard Ground and liquid soft ground. You may bring in any ground or inks you prefer to use. For those with a sensitivity, most of our cleanup is done with vegetable oil and Simple Green along with minimal amounts of odorless mineral spirits while using a sawdust box. Denatured alcohol (to clean off rosin) and acetone (to clean off spray paint) are in use, but outdoors next to the classroom Nitrile gloves and rosin masks are provided.

Loaner etching tools will be available, but bring them in if you have them, please. You’ll need a pad of vellum paper for tracing — 9”x12” is fine. Pencil, erasers; drawing materials. Colored pencils if you have them for creating a color comp; colored pencils provided in class if not. Please bring a shop apron — messy class. Please let me know if you have any questions: — Holly Bird, hollybird@me.com, 727-488-8291
