PR505 Advanced and Professional Intaglio Etching with Holly Bird

Exploration of traditional, safe methods of etching with anon-acid solution (ferric chloride) using copper plates. This Friday session is for students with considerable etching experience who may expand on more advanced techniques or try mezzotints (Please contact instructor in advance to order plates.) The studio is equipped with both a large 36” and smaller 19” press along with a rosin box and spray paint area for aquatints. This is a traditional oil based ink class.

We use traditional, oil-based inks with Universal Hard Ground and liquid soft ground. You may bring in any ground or inks you prefer to use. For those with a sensitivity, most of our cleanup is done with vegetable oil and Simple Green along with minimal amounts of odorless mineral spirits while using a sawdust box. Denatured alcohol (to clean off rosin) and acetone (to clean off spray paint) are in use, but outdoors next to the classroom Nitrile gloves and rosin masks are provided.

I have loaners, but please bring your stylus, burnishers and other etching tools if you have them. We provide an inexpensive student etching paper in class, or you may bring in your own etching papers.
