W-AT214 Gustave Courbet: Realist, Rebel, Provocateur with Dee Kilgo

Lecture

Time: 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

Tuition: $25

Gustave Courbet (1819–1877) is known as the father of the Realist movement in 19th-century art. He earned this distinction in 1850 when his groundbreaking paintings shocked bourgeois viewers by defying long-established academic traditions. Salon audiences had never before encountered large-scale works portraying everyday life and so-called "vulgar" ordinary people. Quickly labeled "the apostle of ugliness," Courbet embraced controversy, becoming the most provocative figure in the Paris art scene. Learn more about his extraordinary talent, tumultuous career, and how his Realist vision helped pave the way for Impressionism.
