Shochikubai" (松竹梅) is a traditional Japanese artistic motif that combines these three plants which bring good fortune:
  • Matsu (松) - Pine
  • Take (竹) - Bamboo
  • Ume (梅) - Plum blossom

Together, these plants are known as the "Three Friends of Winter" because they remain hardy during cold weather and symbolize perseverance and resilience.

In Japanese culture and art:

  • Pine represents longevity and steadfastness as it stays green year-round
  • Bamboo symbolizes flexibility and strength, as it bends but does not break
  • Plum blossoms represent renewal and perseverance, as they bloom beautifully in late winter

This combination is frequently used in Japanese art, particularly in painting (sumi-e), ikebana (flower arranging), and textile designs. The term "shochikubai" appears often in traditional Japanese artwork and is considered a symbol of good fortune and nobility.

Scara will teach the students how to paint Matsu, Bamboo and Ume with her original Sumi-e brush stroke technique and will teach while wearing a kimono.

There will be a $20 fee for the brushes that she will bring from Japan for each student
